Surveying The Land

Workshop

Surveying the Land was an on-site workshop which considered the possibility of architectural preservation without buildings. After a guided walking tour of a former railroad facility located along the Los Angeles River, participants molded, cast and plotted on a map the foundations of the site's demolished buildings. Using material history to investigate and imagine the former aspects, functions, and materiality, this lab explored the infrastructural ruins of Taylor Yard captured in alginate and plaster to inform new and unexpected notions of site.
